SAN JOSE (July 8, 2004) – San Jose has been selected as site of one of four regional finals in the 2007 NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament, bringing the two-day, four-team event back to the city for the third time in a 10-year span.

San Jose State University will be the host school for the San Jose regional finals (the NCAA dropped the term West Region beginning this year), which will be played Thursday and Saturday, March 22 and 24, at HP Pavilion.

"This is a terrific event for the city of San Jose," said Dean Munro, executive director of the San Jose Sports Authority. "It has a $5 million economic impact on downtown, and it means six hours of national television coverage on CBS Sports from our city. Plus, it’s exciting college basketball."

San Jose State will be hosting its second NCAA men’s basketball regional final. In 1997, the first time the school hosted the tournament, the then-named San Jose Arena was the fourth of 12 regional and sub-regional tournament sites to sell out, and the attendance of 18,543 for each of the two sessions remain the two largest NCAA basketball tournament crowds in California. Both previous regional finals were sell-outs.

"We are very excited about hosting the `Regionals' in 2007," said Chuck Bell, the school's director of athletics. "This is a great opportunity for us to work with the Sports Authority and HP Pavilion for the good of the city and the university."

Jim Goddard, executive vice president and manager of HP Pavilion, said "We’re proud to host the tournament in a building that's become synonymous with college basketball on the West Coast. It will be the fourth NCAA basketball championship in HP Pavilion in the last 10 years, including the previous West Region finals in 1997 and 2002 and the NCAA Women’s Final Four in 1999."

The San Jose regional finals of the 2007 NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament are among more than 120 sports events brought to the city by the San Jose Sports Authority. Visit our website at www.sjsa.org.
