SAN
JOSE (Dec. 9 2004) – The San Jose Sports Authority’s
popular Eagles at Rancho del Pueblo youth golf program,
which just concluded its fourth year of operation, would
expand its reach significantly next year through a proposed
partnership with The First Tee.
The Sports Authority recently
signed a letter of intent with The First Tee, created
in 1997 by the World Golf
Foundation, to introduce young people of all backgrounds
to the game of golf and its inherently positive values,
from respect and integrity to individual responsibility
and sportsmanship. Eagles, funded entirely by the efforts
of the Sports Authority through the annual SBC San
Jose Classic hosted by Mayor Ron Gonzales, has introduced
nearly 600 boys and girls to golf by providing 32 hours
of PGA / LPGA instruction at city-owned Rancho del
Pueblo
Golf Course, free access to the driving range and playing
privileges for $1 per round.
"These programs have a
natural fit, and we’re
excited about the possibilities that a partnership
with The First Tee offers to the youth community we
serve
in San Jose," said Dean Munro, executive
director of the Sports Authority.
The partnership with
The First Tee would allow the San Jose program to
expand to include more participants,
enhance its curriculum and provide access to more courses.
Eagles
expanded its outreach during 2004 by adding intermediate-level
instruction and forming a competitive team for juniors.
Eagles
at Rancho del Pueblo is a program of the San Jose Sports
Authority, which actively supports youth
and amateur athletics throughout the community as well
as bringing premier sports events to the city. Visit
