BOULDER , Colo. – The U.S. Men’s National Team will play Uruguay in a Rugby World Cup Qualifier match at Steuber Rugby Stadium at 2 p.m. on Oct. 7, in Stanford, Calif. As a thank you for Northern Californian’s resounding support of USA Rugby this year, the organization has made this event free for all who wish to attend.

This match will be the second in which the U.S. plays Uruguay in a home-and-home series for a chance to compete in the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France . The first game will be held on Sept. 30 in Montevideo , Uruguay , and the team with the most aggregate points after both games wins a ticket to the most anticipated event in the rugby world.

“The two leg matches are vitally important for the Eagles as it can determine direct qualification to the Rugby World Cup Finals. A supreme effort will be required from all involved in preparing for and playing in these matches as Uruguay will provide tough opposition,” USA Rugby’s Interim Chief Operating Officer Steve Griffiths said. “USA Rugby has been marvelously hosted in California this summer and in return for its hospitality, it only seems fair that we give the people of California the opportunity to come and watch - what will no doubt be a very exciting match - for free.”

What was appropriately coined as the “Summer of Rugby” in Northern California, USA Rugby hosted its Collegiate Championships, the Barclay’s Churchill Cup and a Rugby World Cup Qualifier against Barbados , drawing in over 20,000 supporters, fans, sponsors and volunteers from around “The Golden State” in 2006.

USA Rugby, in co-operation with Stanford University , will also be hosting a canned food drive to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties . As an alternative to the price of admission, anyone who will be attending this event is asked to bring a non-perishable food item to donate.
