SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Dec. 20, 2006) – Applied Materials, Inc., has donated scholarships worth $11,000 to The First Tee® of San Jose, a youth golf program dedicated to improving the lives of young people, in recognition of Nancy Handel, retiring senior vice president, and her 22-year career with the company.

The scholarships will fund participation of 22 girls enrolled in San Jose public schools in The First Tee, a character development program that teaches life skills such as self-management, goal-setting and conflict resolution through golf instruction.

“We’re delighted that Applied Materials has made this commitment,” said Shelly Wolfe, director, The First Tee of San Jose. “The goal of The First Tee is to positively affect youth with lessons they’ll use every day of their lives. With Applied Materials’ help, we can do just that.”

“Applied Materials has a long history in the community and is a big supporter of programs that value honesty, integrity and sportsmanship,” Handel said. “The First Tee is an instrumental program in preparing youth of all walks of life, and I’m pleased that even more participants will be able to partake in this wonderful initiative.”

Handel, who has been a strong proponent of programs that improve the career prospects for young women, was recently honored with the Community Service Award at the 2006 Bay Area CFO of the Year Awards. She is a Senior Fellow of Class XI and former member of the Executive Committee of Silicon Valley for the American Leadership Forum, a nonprofit organization focusing on building a strong network of key leaders across private public and nonprofit sectors. She is also a leader with the Girl Scouts of Santa Clara County, serving 12 years on its board of directors and six years as president.

The First Tee of San Jose is accepting applications for scholarships, which offer participants an opportunity to experience the sport of golf while receiving recognition for exceptional achievement in areas such as academics, leadership skills, character development and chapter and community Involvement. For more information on scholarships or sponsorship opportunities, please contact Shelly Wolfe at (408) 288-2932.
