V. San Jose Sports Hall of Fame Review
Roberta Hayashi reported on the Hall of Fame event. This was the 13th year and brought the total number of inductees to 63. We had over 700 community leaders in attendance, which has been consistent with the past few years. Roberta recognized Mark Purdy’s contributions to the event. He did an outstanding job on the narration and producing the inductee videos.
The event came in on budget, and we will make a total of $10,000 in charitable donations to support Special Olympics Northern California as well as the high school athletic programs of the 2007 High School Athletes of the Year.
VI. Executive Director Report
Patricia gave her goals and priorities for the upcoming months which include filling the 3 open positions within the organization and working to build stronger connections with our patrons, the City partners, Team San Jose and Convention & Visitors Bureau. We will continue to strengthen our outreach to youth and the community by growing the Sports Authority programs including Hall of Fame, REACH and the First Tee. SJSA would also like to increase visibility and serve as an advocate not only for new events, but for facilities, franchises etc.
SJSA is scheduled to move at the end of the month. Bridge Bank has been a great patron and landlord, but given their expansion, they don’t have excess space to provide for us any longer. The SJSA offices will be moving to the rear building on the San Jose Water Company site in late spring when our lease begins on there. In the meantime, SJSA will move to temporary office space.
Patricia handed out a draft and briefly reviewed an updated organizational chart.
VII. The First Tee Update
Victor gave a review of 2007 and expressed the challenges the program has clearly communicating to the public that The First Tee is a youth development program emphasizing life skills rather than strictly a golf program. The program had a 38% participation increase this year. The program is continuing to grow by having outreach programs introducing the First Tee to various schools in the area.
The 2008 First Tee Invitational will be held July 20 & 21 at CordeValle. San Jose was also awarded the First Tee Network Meetings in 2009 – their annual nationwide convention. We expect delegates from nearly every chapter around the country. This is a big win for us to attract this event.
VIII. Event Calendar Highlights
World Junior Table Tennis Championships December 8-15 at Stanford University. This is the first time the event has ever been held in the United States. SJSA staff will assist at the event under the director of BASOC.
The Amgen Tour of California will be back in San Jose as the stage 3 finish on Wednesday, February 20. San Jose is one of the few cities on the Tour that have been part of the race since its inception. With San Jose hosting one of the most challenging stages of the Tour, this race has become the most difficult and most prestigious professional cycling event in the United States.
PAC 10 Women’s Basketball Tournament will be held March 7- 10 at HP Pavilion. This is the final year in San Jose for this cycle. Susan Hammer is again the chair of the LOC, which will again raise $40,000 - $50,000 to provide tickets to the tournament for underserved kids and their families.
Pacific Alliance Championships will be held March 28 – 30 at San Jose State University and the Convention Center. This major international gymnastics competition is one of the last prior to the Olympic Games in Beijing and will bring 12-14 countries and their teams to San Jose to participate.
REACH Youth Scholarship Program will be held in the spring again this year. We are currently looking for additional sponsors for the event. Date is still to be determined.
We are looking at the bid specifications and cycles for following events: NCAA Regionals 2011-2014, U.S. Figure Skating Nationals in 2010 and USA Volleyball events in a variety of disciplines.
IX. Board Development
Currently, we have four slots open on our board. The board development committee is continuing to meet with prospective board members and will be meeting as a committee next month. The board was asked to send recommendations they may have directly to Anne Cribbs.
