To positively influence the lives of young people by
providing learning facilities and educational programs
that promote character development and life-enhancing
values through the game of golf.
The First Tee was created in 1997 to introduce young
people of all backgrounds to the game of golf and the
life lessons it teaches. Through The First Tee Life Skills
Experience™, a curriculum for teaching character
education through specific life skills, children and
teen-agers discover how the skills essential to success
on a golf course can help them flourish in life. These
skills include self-management, interpersonal communication,
goal-setting, mentoring and effective conflict resolution.
The Life Skills experience sets
The First Tee apart from other junior golf programs
and youth initiatives,
and ultimately strives to instill in participants The
First Tee Nine Core Values™:
| Honesty |
Judgment |
| Integrity |
Confidence |
| Sportsmanship |
Responsibility |
| Respect |
Perseverance |

The
San Jose Youth Golf Program began in 2001 with a $50,000
grant awarded by the United States Golf Association
(USGA) to the San Jose Sports Authority. Renamed the
Eagles at Rancho del Pueblo for the golf course where
instruction was based, this local program had very
similar goals to the national First Tee program. In
June 2005, the Sports Authority received approval from
the San Jose City Council to bring its Eagles’ program
into The First Tee. Shortly afterward, the Sports
Authority signed a formal agreement with The First
Tee, which is based at Rancho del Pueblo Golf
Course. The agreement with Rancho del Pueblo runs 10
years with a five-year renewal. Fall 2005 will be the
first session of instruction under The First Tee.
The City of San Jose Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood
Services and CourseCo Inc. served as valuable partners
in providing the youth of San Jose with this outstanding
program.
Rancho del Pueblo Golf Course, owned by the City of
San Jose, is fast becoming one of the Bay Area's most
popular
nine-hole golf courses. The course incorporates three
ponds and multiple bunkers adding both strategy and
beauty to a memorable executive golf experience in
a convenient
urban setting.
